Series 2: Material belonging to V Subrahmanyan’s family Sub-Series 0

This arrangement strives to maintain the original order in which the material was received at the archives.

Series 1 covers Subrahmanyan’s research work in biochemistry between 1924 to 1975 and administrative papers related to work, retirement, and projects at Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI). It also includes photographs of Subrahmanyan with family and associates.

Sub-Series 1, correspondence, contains letters regarding (i) Subrahmanyan’s retirement from CFTRI in 1963 and involvement in the NIH project and, (ii) the exchange of letters relating to research and administration at CFTRI.

Sub-Series 2, includes statements and letters related to litigation arising out of royalty settlement issues between associates who worked on the processing of a baby food formula using buffalo milk at CFTRI in the early 1950s.

Sub-Series 3, covers his notes, publications, and drafts spanning his research career - starting as a student of biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to his interest in soil science while studying in London under Sir John Russell, and later on heading the chair of Biochemistry at IISc and shifting focus to nutritional evaluation and conservation of food grains in India.

Sub-Series 4, contains photographs of Subrahmanyan during work visits for meetings and conferences, group photos with associates, and photos with family.

Sub-Series 5, contains awards and certificates received by Subrahmanyan during his career.

Series 2 includes materials belonging to V Subrahmanyan’s family, including his notes related to his personal finances, material related to his demise in 1979, and copies of records related to his projects taken from Vidhana Soudha in Karnataka.

Biographical / Historical

Vaidyanatra Subrahmanyan was a biochemist from Sirkazhi, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu, India. He was involved in projects related to wastewater treatment, food science and technology in pre and post-independent India. He began his career working on fermentation studies with Gilbert Fowler. In 1925, on a JN Tata Endowment scholarship, he went to the Rothamsted Experimental Station in the UK. In 1948, Subrahmanyan was chosen as the Planning Officer of the proposed Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysore by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). After two years of groundwork, including acquiring the Cheluvamba Palace belonging to Mysore’s royal family, CFTRI was established, and Subrahmanyan was appointed as its Director.
