The N V Joshi papers are arranged into the following series:

Series 1: Correspondence Series 2: Research and Administration Series 3: Personal and Ephemera

Series 1 contains correspondence to and from N V Joshi that has been arranged into six sub-series, each sub-series containing correspondence from a particular decade. Inside the sub-series, all the letters have been arranged alphabetically according to the sender.

Series 2 contains all kinds of material related to research and administration. This series has been divided into 8 sub-series. Sub-series 1 contains research publications authored by N V Joshi that have been arranged according to the publication year. Sub-series 2 contains manuscript drafts of some research publications authored by N V Joshi that have been arranged alphabetically. Sub-series 3 contains manuscripts, articles, project proposals and lecture notes which have been used by N V Joshi either for furthering his understanding on particular topics or for use in his research work. Sub-series 4 contains reviews and comments given by N V Joshi on submission for journals due to being a member of Current Science and the Indian Academy of sciences. Also included are anonymous referee comments and reports on N V Joshi submissions to journals. Sub-series 5 contains pamphlets, program schedules and other materials from meetings, conferences, workshops and discussions attended by N V Joshi. Sub-series 6 contains N V Joshi’s thesis drafts, handwritten notes, research notebooks, raw data used for further analysis, and digital data in the form of floppy disks. Sub-series 7 contains those reports which are either made by N V Joshi or have portions to which he has contributed. Sub-Series 8 contains project proposals involving N V Joshi as an investigator or as the drafter of these proposals. The last sub-series contains documents about internal administration related to Current Science board and the Indian Institute of Science as N V Joshi was part of both of these institutions.

Series 3 contains materials that have been classified as personal and ephemera. The series contains 2 sub-series. Sub-series 1 contains N V Joshi’s biodata, performa, payslips, academic progress reports, photographs and Identity cards from various positions and events. Sub-series 2 contains greeting cards, travel related documents, certificates, receipts of philanthropic donations, media clippings, event invitations, brochures and writings that N V Joshi has collected and kept over the years.

Biographical / Historical

Niranjan Vasudeo Joshi was born on 14 December 1951 in Belgaum, Karnataka. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Bombay in 1972 and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in physics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay in 1974. After completing his master’s degree, N V Joshi joined the Molecular Biophysics Unit at the Indian Institute of Science as a research student and obtained his Ph.D in 1980. N V Joshi worked in the roles of a mathematical programmer and a scientific officer at the Centre for Theoretical Studies, IISc from December 1983 to July 1987. He later joined the Centre for Ecological Sciences as a Lecturer and was promoted to Assistant Professor. In 2003, he took charge as Chair of CES. N V Joshi’s expertise in theoretical statistics and computer simulations enabled much interdisciplinary research in the fields of ecology, cell biology, genetics, anthropology and meteorology which were evolving knowledge fields in the scientific landscape of IISc. Apart from his affiliations with IISc, N V Joshi was also involved in Current Science, and is a member of the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS).

N V Joshi retired as an Associate Professor from the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), IISc, Bangalore in 2019. N V Joshi’s father was a Sanskrit teacher who later took up the post of the judge of the Bombay City Civil Court till his retirement in 1976. N V Joshi’ mother taught English and Commerce at the SNDT Women’s University, Bombay till her retirement in 1992. He also has two younger siblings.
