Content Description

The accession contains research publications, media clippings, letters, booklets, magazines, greeting cards, certificates, brochures, photographs, floppy disks, identity cards, handwritten notes and notebooks, printouts of computer generated data and computer simulations, reports, project proposals, cards, and certificates related to N V Joshi. The letters cover a wide range of topics and show the numerous connections N V Joshi had from 1978 to 2016. The research publications and their drafts are a result of multiple collaborations by N V Joshi with other research scholars working in various fields of science. The collaborations have also resulted in the generation of a lot of data that was subject to statistical analysis and was also feeded into computers to run simulations. Information of such analysis is available from N V Joshi’s handwritten notes, notebooks and printouts of the computer generated data. Majority of the brochures and booklets are from various meetings and conferences attended by N V Joshi. Media clippings given to N V Joshi by his colleagues contain among other things, an obituary of S Chandrasekhar and a tribute article for J B S Haldane. Some booklets, certificates and magazines form part of items that N V Joshi has collected over the years. Among the items is a poem on Seymour Benzer. The accession also contains a photographic slide, a negative and some portrait photographs of N V Joshi.

Condition Description

The collection is in fairly good condition. Some of the documents appear to be fragile and torn at the edges. The fragile documents have to be handled with care.

Dispostion

All material processed as a new collection, MS-017 (N V Joshi Papers). All received material is retained for the collection, except for duplicates. N V Joshi is an eminent Indian ecologist and statistician who worked in different roles over the years at the Centre for Theoretical Studies and the Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc, Bangalore. He is a major contributor to methodizing mathematical models for ecological and anthropological phenomena. His research spans across the broad academic themes of theoretical biology, climatology, statistical analysis of behavioral and ecological data, and molecular biophysics, He was a member of Current Science magazine, and the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS). He worked extensively on ecology and retired as an Associate Professor from the Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc, Bangalore. The accession will be transferred to a new collection titled the N V Joshi Papers.

Retention Rule

The N V Joshi papers fits under the scope of the Archives at NCBS as the material reflects early attempts at bringing together statistics, computer applications and ecology together. The papers also document interdisciplinary work conducted in the field of ecological sciences from the 1980s. The Archives shall have full authority in handling the material in the future.
