Scope and Contents

Series one contains correspondence which has been arranged chronologically. Series two contains material related to research. It includes project report at ONGC, lectures, published articles and maps made by Balakrishnan. Series three contains photographs of Balakrishnan at meetings, events and conferences. It also includes some personal photographs from travels around India. Series four contains collectables, mostly maps and atlases which Balakrishnan used to collect.

Biographical / Historical

TS Balakrishnan was a geologist who the former director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). He was a member of the Geological Society of India. Balakrishnan was trained in MSc Physics from Allahabad Univeristy and worked as a researcher in CV Raman's lab at IISc. He joined ONGC in 1955 and had spent time in USA training in offshore oil exploration. At ONGC Balakrishnan was in charge of offshore venture in the Gulf of Cambay and initiated ONGC’s first offshore drilling project in 1970-71. In 1982 he became the Director of Geophysics at the Bombay Offshore Project and worked there until his retirement in 1986. Post retirement, he continued working on his tectonic maps and published the ‘Tectonic map of India and contiguous region’ in 2009.

Arrangement

The intellectual arrangement strives to preserve provenance and original order of the papers. Where an original order could not be found, the Archives has applied an order, and folders within sub-series are arranged usually in chronological or alphabetical order. See Scope and Content section for details.

Content Description

The accession consists of notebooks, dockets, research references, maps, transparencies, and tracings related to T S Balakrishnan and his research on the tectonic and gravity map of India. The accession also includes photographs related to his trip to Hyderabad, life at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited, time at the Indian Institute of Science with C V Raman, and presence at ceremonies and events. The accession also includes Compact Disks and Born-Digital data which includes diagrams, maps, seminar papers, and drafts of correspondence. The Born-Digital data is currently stored in T. S. Balakrishnan’s laptop which will be archived in 2024.

Condition Description

The collection is in a good condition. Some of the maps and books are fragile and care has to be exercised while handling them. The photographs are also in a fragile condition and have to be handled with care.
