Stone, Marshall H., 24 October 1954
Scope and Contents
Response to Madhava Rao's letter, enclosed, requesting Stone's support in securing a visiting professorship for six months at the University of Chicago and for six months at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, proposing to work on Lie algebra and relativistic wave equations, as well as Gibbsian statistics and the foundations of quantum mechanics. Mentions correspondence with N. Jacobson of Yale, shown to Stone whilst he was at Bangalore, as well as a book by E.M. Corson, "Introduction to Tensors, Spinors, and Relativistic Wave Equations," which makes mention of a "Madhavarao algebra" and suggests working on its possible extension, also mentions conversations with Norbert Wiener of MIT regarding the same. Intends to apply for a Fulbright Travel Grant, requests Stone's intimation that he is likely to receive such visiting appointments.
Stone responds that he is no longer chair of the mathematics department at Chicago, and has forwarded Madhava Rao's letters to the new chair, Saunders MacLane, suggests that several professors at Chicago would be interested in mathematical aspects of quantum theory. Notes however that some support from Madhava Rao's own institution would improve his chances, and that teaching appointments are unlikely to be available at Chicago. Hopes to see Madhava Rao during a sabbatical in India, 1955-56.
