Scope and Contents

Series one contains two sub-series. Sub-series one includes office orders, circulars and registers from Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF). Sub-series two contains photographs taken at various events, workshops, anniversary and celebrations related to SCARF. Series two contains one folder of photographs from ASHA NGO. The photos are related to events where Menon was a guest or visitor.

Biographical / Historical

Mambalakalathil Sarada Menon was born on 5 April, 1923. Menon lived most of life in Chennai, and graduated in medicine from Madras Medical College in 1951. After completing her MD, Menon obtained a Diploma in Psychiatric Medicine from NIMHANS, becoming the first woman psychiatrist in India. She joined the Institute of Mental Health in 1959 and became its first woman superintendent in 1961. In 1984, Menon founded Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) for those affected by mental health issues. SCARF provides shelter,therapy and vocational training for patients and also runs a clinic. Menon was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Avvaiyar Award in 2016 in honour of her work as a social worker. Menon died at the age of 98 in Chennai in 2021.
