Scope and Contents

The archival collection is divided into five sub-series, namely, General Correspondence, Administration, Projects and Campaigns involving Panduranga Hegde, Writings by Panduranga Hegde, and Research References.

The first series General Correspondence is divided into six subseries decade-wise. The sub-series are hence, 1970-1979, 1980-1989, 1990-1999, 2000-2009, 2010-2019, and the last sub-series is titled undated, and all the undated letters are bucketed under this sub-series.

The second series Administration, is divided into 3 subseries, – The first sub-series reports by Prakruti and Parisara Samrakshana Kendra – and as named, the subseries consists of reports produced by these two organisations arranged chronologically. The second sub-series is Programmes organised by Parisara Samrakshana Kendra (PSK), and it consists of correspondence and administrative files related to different workshops and camps organised by PSK arranged chronologically. The third sub-series is titled Administrative Records- Various Organisations. This subseries consists of folders relating to various organisations that he might have been a part of or he had participated in their projects. This consists of draft correspondences, application for grants, expense charts and inventories, etc arranged alphabetically.

The third series is titled Projects and Campaigns involving Panduranga Hegde. The sub-series here are based on the different projects that either he initiated or he was a part of. There are 17 sub-series, and each sub-series has material related to that particular project. It will have the correspondence, administrative files, media clippings, publicity materials, writings, and research references associated with the project arranged alphabetically.

The fourth series is Writings by Panduranga Hegde. This series has folders that consist of Hegde's writings arranged alphabetically. It consists of articles in Hindi, English, and Kannada, and it also has diaries and notebooks from Hegde.

The fifth and final series is titled, Research References and is divided into sub-series based on the form of the research reference - and hence they are Books, Ephemera, Infographics and Maps, Media Clippings, Press Releases and finally writings and reports. All of them are arranged alphabetically

Biographical / Historical

Panduranga Hegde is an environmentalist from Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, India, and is known as the person who started the Appiko movement to protect trees in the Western Ghats. He was inspired by the Chipko movement led by Sundarlal Bahuguna and got involved with the protection of forests and the environment. He is actively involved in the Save Western Ghats campaign. His organisation, Parisara Samrakshana Kendra, has been involved in multiple campaigns against huge developmental projects that threaten biodiversity. He has also been involved in multiple other projects like the Western Ghats Forestry Project by the Karnataka Forest Department.

Arrangement

The intellectual arrangement strives to preserve the provenance and original order of the papers. Where an original order could not be found, the Archives have applied an order, and folders within the sub-series are arranged usually in chronological or alphabetical order.

Condition Description

Most of the papers are dusty and fragile.
