Content Description

The collection contains material donated by different donors related to history of ecology and conservation in India. Series one contains papers of Zafar Futehally who was a prominent ornithologist and writer. Futehally was involved with BNHS, NLFBW, BET, WFF, MoE etc and has worked on writing about birding and conservation of ecosystems in India. It includes birding diaries that belonged to Thomas Waterfield who was a birder based out of Pune. Series two contains material from L Shyamal who is a birder who is also involved with citizen science and open access digital archives. It contains material related to local birding networks in cities in India. Series three contains material related to NS Adkoli who was an Indian Forest Service officer, who worked in Karnataka. It contains a manuscript of Adkoli's autobiography. Series four contains material from Bharat Bushan Mamidi, it contains one citizen's report on Hyderabad's urban ecology. Series five contains material from V R Thiruvady, who was a member of the Bangalore Environment Trust. It contains material related to BET projects in Bangalore. Series six contains material from Asad Rahmani, it includes BNHS reports of floricans and Sarus crane. Series seven includes a manuscript in Hindi on wildlife in India by Pandit Shriram Sharma. Series eight contains correspondence from Monica Jackson, who is from BR Hills and was the daughter of RC Morris. It includes letters from Laeeq Futehally. Series nine includes transcripts of oral history interviews conducted with ecologists and wildlife biologists by the researcher Michael Lewis.

Biographical / Historical

This collection contains donations from 8 individuals and organisations that have worked in the field of ecology and conservation.

1. Zafar Futehally was a prominent environmental conservationist, most notable for writing extensively on ornithology and being the founder-editor of The Newsletter for Birdwatchers. He was also one of the founding members of the Bangalore Environment Trust in 1987.

2. L Shyamal is an independent researcher working at the intersection of biology and computation. He is also a Wikipedia editor, often improving articles related to Indian natural history.

3. N S Adkoli was an Indian Forest Service officer, who worked in Karnataka.

4. Bharat Bushan Mamidi is the founder of Centre for Action Research and People's Development.

5. Vijay Thiruvady was a co-founder of Bangalore Environment Trust along with Zafar Futehally and Satish Dhawan. He was also a tree expert, often conducting nature walks in the city.

6. Pandit Shriram Sharma (1892 -1967), was the editor of 'Vishaal Bhaarat' (one of the most acclaimed Hindi magazines of its time), and also the author of books on Indian wildlife and the freedom struggle. He wrote in Hindi, his books on wildlife include Jungle ke Jeev and Shikar. He was a contemporary of Jim Corbett, and Pearl S Buck.

7. Monica Jackson was a scottish climber who has written about mountaneering and conducted anthropology research at Kollegal, Karnataka. She grew up in BR Hills and was the daughter of coffee planters Ralph Camroux Morris and Heather Née Kinloch.

8. Michael Lewis is a professor of Environmental Studies at Salisbury University and writes often on ecology and environment history in India.

Physical Description

The collection is fairly in good condition. Some of the letters appear to be fragile and torn at the edges. The booklet is fragile and requires careful and minimal handling.
