M Krishnan Papers
Scope and Contents
The M Krishnan papers contains writings by Krishnan in the form of media-clippings and photocopies of media-clippings of his regular columns and articles that appeared in a variety of English language newspapers, weeklies and magazines between 1940s to 1990s. The writings are on range of topics from natural history, wildlife, art and photography and art education.
The papers have been divided into two series to acknowledge the provenance of the material.
Series 1 contains media-clippings from The Statesman donated by Srinivasan Bhashyam.
Series 2 contains photocopies of newspaper, weekly and magazine articles written by Krishnan that was donated by Ramachandran Guha. It includes Krishnan's columns in The Statesman, The Hindu, Shankar's Weekly, Illustrated Weekly of India etc.

Biographical / Historical
Madhaviah Krishnan known popularly as M. Krishnan was a writer, photographer and naturalist from India. Krishnan was born in Tamil Nadu on 30 June 1912. He studied botany at Presidency College in Madras in 1927 and law at Law College, Madras in 1934. Krishnan made a living primarily as a freelance writer and artist. Krishnan wrote in both Tamil and English. He was a keen naturalist and spent a lot of his time conducting field visits. He was awarded a Fellowship from the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in the 1960s for an ecological survey of the mammals of peninsular India. He published a column titled 'Country Notebook' in The Statesman for 46 years. Krishnan served on the Steering Committee for Project Tiger as well as the Indian Board for Wildlife. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1970. Krishnan passed away in 1996.
