Scope and Contents

The bound volumes document a wide range of scientific inquiry, much of it rooted in the region’s ecology, flora, fauna, and geological features. Topics include extraction and analysis of bioactive compounds from local plant species, ecological studies of river systems, biodiversity assessments, and geological mapping of the Siwalik and Himalayan foothills. These works often include experimental data, field observations, and references to the specific environmental and cultural context of Jammu and Kashmir. Series 1: Botany- This series includes theses focusing on plant sciences, covering areas such as plant taxonomy, physiology, ecology, medicinal plants, and agricultural botany. Many works explore the biodiversity of the Jammu and Kashmir region, offering valuable insights into its unique flora. Series 2: Chemistry- Theses in this series deal with organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. Several works examine the synthesis and characterization of bioactive compounds and the study of local natural resources, reflecting the applied and experimental strengths of the department. Series 3: Geography- This series documents research on human and physical geography, land use patterns, geomorphology, and regional planning. A number of theses focus on the socio-economic and environmental aspects of Jammu and Kashmir, making them valuable for regional studies. Series 4: Geology- The geology series focuses on mineral exploration, stratigraphy, petrology, and structural geology. Many theses study the Himalayan geology and the mineral wealth of Jammu and Kashmir, making these works significant for understanding the region's geological framework. Series 5: Physics- This series covers theoretical and experimental physics, including solid-state physics, nuclear physics, spectroscopy, and materials science. Some theses also relate to the application of physics in local industries and environmental studies. Series 6: Statistics- The thesis in this series, focuses on statistical methods applied to demographic studies, particularly understanding rural population trends and fertility in the region. Series 7: Zoology- This series focuses on animal sciences, including taxonomy, ecology, parasitology, and physiology. Many theses study the fauna of Jammu and Kashmir, their habitats, and their roles in the ecosystem, contributing to conservation and biodiversity knowledge.

Biographical / Historical

This collection consists of doctoral theses submitted by individual scholars from various departments of the University of Jammu. The theses were produced as part of requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree and supervised by full-time faculty members of the university. The scholars represented in the collection specialised in diverse scientific fields, including Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Biology, Geology, Geography and Statistics. The materials were sourced from the Dhanvantri Library, the central repository of the University of Jammu. The University of Jammu was established in 1969 following the bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir, under the provisions of the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969. It is a public state university located in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India, and has been accredited with an ‘A++’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The university offers instruction and research opportunities in various branches of knowledge, including the science, humanities, and social sciences. The present collection reflects academic research conducted within its science departments over several decades. The collection provides meaningful insight into the evolution of doctoral research and scientific training in Jammu and Kashmir. It documents how scholars and supervisors in the region engaged with locally grounded topics that are often underrepresented in mainstream scientific archives. It contributes to the documentation of marginalized STEM histories by highlighting region-specific research conducted by scholars from Jammu and Kashmir, often underrepresented in national academic narratives.
