A Contribution to the Herpetology of Jammu and Kashmir State, 1979
Scope and Contents
This detailed herpetological study investigates the diversity, distribution, and zoogeography of amphibians and reptiles across the three main regions of Jammu & Kashmir-Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. It maps 76 confirmed species, noting their regional affinities (Palearctic vs. Oriental), altitudinal distribution, and unique faunal composition. The research identifies several new species and highlights the presence of 11 species endemic to J&K, which are not found elsewhere in India. The study also provides evidence for historical faunal migration patterns and environmental adaptations shaped by geography and climate.
