Scope and Contents

This issue contains an article arguing for vocational training, stating that literary education alone is inadequate for local needs. There is also an essay titled “Home and Fatherland,” tracing the evolution of attachment to place, from tribal societies to modern nationalism. There is a critical essay on William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair, an account of activities undertaken by the Jesuit Fathers outside the classroom, a reminiscencement of the author’s school and college days, and a record of the participation of the college in the reception of the Prince of Wales during his visit to Madras. Also included is an article about the forthcoming silver jubilee of the Bishop of Mangalore and a poem dedicated to Dr. L. P. Fernandes, who worked alongside Fr Muller at his hospital. Then there are the regular sections of the magazine such as the Rector’s Report, the Malayalam, Canarese and Sanskrit pages, reports on college societies, cricket and other sports, examinations, book notices, advertisements and photographs.
