The interviews in this collection were conducted in collaboration with the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS). These interviews are with early generations of agricultural scientists who contributed to the development of agricultural research and education in India and other developing economies.

FAS is an independent research organization based in India and established in 2003. Its major objective is to facilitate multi-disciplinary theoretical and empirical enquiry in the field of agrarian studies in India and elsewhere in less-developed countries.

Biography

Jagdish Kumar Ladha is an agricultural scientist known for his contributions to sustainable agriculture and soil science. Born in 1952, he earned his PhD in Soil Science from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), in 1976. He joined the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 1983, where he promoted resource-efficient practices, particularly rice cultivation. His research has focused on the development and promotion of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). Dr Ladha has received several awards and honours, including the MacArthur Fellowship. Since 2002, he has also held positions at UC Davis, Cornell University, and Columbia University. He has authored and co-authored numerous research papers and books on topics ranging from soil health to sustainable agricultural practices.
