Scope and Contents
The interviews in this collection were conducted in collaboration with the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS). These interviews are with early generations of agricultural scientists who contributed to the development of agricultural research and education in India and other developing economies.
FAS is an independent research organization based in India and established in 2003. Its major objective is to facilitate multi-disciplinary theoretical and empirical enquiry in the field of agrarian studies in India and elsewhere in less-developed countries.

Biography
Mariappan Velayutham is a soil scientist in India. He earned his PhD from Aberdeen University, Scotland. He has been affiliated with ICAR since the very beginning of his career as a Soil Scientist, Senior Scientist and Principal Scientist and has worked at ICAR and ICAR-CPRCI, Kasargod. Later he was appointed as the Director of the National Institute of Soil Science Survey and Land Use Planning in Nagpur. His contributions are marked by his work in doing surveys with regard to soil testing in different regions and then determining the efficient use of fertilizer and nutrients for that particular soil. His experience as a Project Coordinator in All India Coordinated Project Research has given him insights about the extension system and research administration.
