Description

The four research divisions consisted of Structural Biology, Neurogenetics, Molecular Neurobiology and Biology of Infectious diseases. A programme for access to recombinant DNA techniques for research on rice biology, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, was set up. Academic activities were from labs at the TIFR centre at IISc, Bangalore. Girija Muralidhar, Satyajit Mayor and M.G.Muralidhar joined the faculty. Research was being carried out to genetically engineer rice plants to survive against environmental stress. Initial work on this was to be done in collaboration with Richard Jefferson, CAMBIA, Canberra, Australia. Further investigation was to be done in collaboration with Marc Van Montagu, University of Gent, Belgium.
