Content Description

This accession consists of official and personal letters, notices, administration documents, project reports, newspaper cuttings, reference documents, booklets, photographs (photographic prints, microfilm slides and negatives), data sheets, and handwritten manuscripts of his articles. Most of the material is dated between 1983-2022. These documents belonged to Prakash Gole, who was an ornithologist and an environmentalist. Gole held a master’s degree in Economics and worked for the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics for some time after graduation. He had also written a book on Indian history during the same period. In 1963, he started a group called Outward Bound Pioneers Club, where he started his work in environmental conservation and education. His key contributions include establishing the Ecological Society in 1982, which runs a one-year diploma course in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources. Gole has also worked with ornithologist Salim Ali. A rare bird, Black Necked Crane, which was declared extinct from India by Salim Ali, was found by Gole in Arunachal Pradesh around the late 1980s. He has worked on Sarus Cranes, Siberian Cranes, and Wetland conservation. Gole was also interested in ecological restoration and ecological planning. He worked on the restoration project in Panshet catchment area and on other ecological projects with the government of Maharashtra.

Condition Description

The collection is in fairly good condition except some correspondence that is fungus-infested.

All material processed as a new collection, MS-018 (Prakash Gole Papers). All received material is retained for the collection, except for duplicates.

Provenance

The collection was packed and couriered to the Archives at NCBS on the 17th of April 2023 by Parul Lakhani Ghuge, who works with the Pune Ecological Society. The material belonged to Prakash Gole, who had passed away in 2013, and it was in the possession of Swati Gole, wife of Prakash Gole. It was received at the Archives on the 17th of April, 2023 by Anjali J R. The accession will be transferred to a new collection titled the Prakash Gole Papers.

Retention Rule

Permanent retention. The Jamal Ara Collection fits within the scope of the Archives at NCBS. The papers provide context for the activities of the Pune Ecological Society. The Archives has offered to preserve and catalogue these materials. The donor and the Archives have agreed that the Archives will have full authority in handling the material in the future, as per the Deed of Gift (except for third-party copyright).
