Content Description

The accession primarily includes R Prabhakar’s research work during early 1990s towards his thesis on the ecological changes over the past 200 years in the Nilgiri hills, which are situated in the Western Ghats of Southern India. The collection consists of records of field work such as oral history transcripts, data collection forms for survey of villages and forests, maps created by Prabhakar, copies of maps from Survey of India and other repositories, a journal, and notebooks containing lecture notes from IISc. It also includes notes about land and vegetation use in the Nilgiri Biosphere and correspondence with institutes, colleagues, and mentors.

Condition Description

This collection includes a large number of maps that are fragile. A few notes contain transparencies glued to each other. These require conservation.

The collection was given to Deepika S at the Archives at NCBS by R Prabhakar on 21st May 2023. It was previously kept with Prabhakar at his residence in Chennai.

Retention Rule

The material documents over two centuries of ecological changes in the Nilgiri reserve area. It could be of relevance to those interested in the intersection of history, environmental sciences and cartography. The Archives has offered to preserve and catalogue these materials. The donor and the Archives have agreed that the Archives will have full authority in handling the material in the future.
