Maldhari lease documents from Rajabhai Tramta

Content Description

This document belongs to Hama Devasi of Reshamiya village, Chotila. This is a land lease agreement signed between Hama Devasi and Vid Contractor Jagubhai Dadbhai Khachar on the date 03.07.1982. The document was signed on a Rs. 5 stamp paper and has a fingerprint. The agreement states that the piece of grassland, locally known as Vid, named “Jungriawali Talavdiwalu vid” will be given under lease to Hama Devasi for revenue farming/grazing under the Ijara system for 2 years at the cost of Rs. 1225. This type of land lease agreement indicates how the grasslands of today were managed in the past.

Condition Description

The document is in good condition but has folds and creases, and will need to be preserved professionally. The document will be later transferred to the Maldhari Collection.

Provenance

The custodian is Rajabhai Tramta, father of Govindbhai Tramta who is an employee of Conservation indica. The material was handed to the organization by Govindbhai Tramta on 8th February 2025. The custody of the material lies with his father.

Retention Rule

The document is important to PAST and CI as it gives us a glimpse into grassland management in the 1980s. The physical material is currently on loan from creator Govind Tramta to CI. The document will be under CI’s custody as a loan until its digitization, by June-July, after which it will be passed down to its owner. The digitized copies will be housed at Archives at NCBS and CI. CI plans to keep a copy of the digitized document for further consultation by local communities and researchers in the future.
