Content Description

Archival material from Venkatasubbiah Siddhartha's papers, covering intersections of science and technology policy in India, security and international policy, from circa 1966 to circa 2005. Including material relating to ISRO, National Committee on Science and Technology, Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet. Almost all material is in the form of loose sheets/paper or thin, bound reports. The accession consists of official and personal correspondence from and to V Siddhartha, reference, media clippings, schedules and reports of conferences, details of workshops, talks, books or publications from foreign countries regarding government policies concerning defense and security, printouts of emails, CDs, presentation slides and few photographs related to V Siddhartha’s professional life in science policy. The accession consists of original and photocopied papers with annotations from V Siddhartha. It consists of letters from Satish Dhawan. It also consists of some letters from ISRO. There are printouts of publications from various fields, including religion and culture apart from basic sciences. There are personal letters from his friends and family. There is one photograph from an international meeting, and another with Satish Dhawan, which was printed on a paper and on a transparent slide. The material also consists of CDs, floppy disks with data. There are interview transcripts or notes/summaries from interviews, along with talks or work marked as unpublished. There are materials related to national security, along with science policy. There are letters conveying his appointment to different positions, as well as farewell letters or tokens/cards. Apart from some of his own published articles and booklets, there are a few magazines and booklets which he had collected. There is an obituary booklet for Brahm Prakash. There are newspaper reports and articles, regarding science and technology in India. There are also handwritten notes from different meetings and conferences. Fair. Certain letters are printed on delicate, translucent paper and might need special care while handling.

Dispostion

Work in progress. Material appraised to be of archival value will be transferred to a new collections, MS-025, V Siddhartha Papers. Other material will be returned to the donor, or given away to the public, depending on the nature of the material and the wishes of the donor.

Venkatasubbiah Siddhartha had kept the material at his residence in Sadashivnagar, Bangalore. The Archives at NCBS (via Venkat Srinivasan) packed the material at his residence and transported it by road to the archives on July 23, 2023.

Retention Rule

Permanent storage. The papers fit under the scope of the Archives at NCBS for being part of the history of the science and technology policymaking in India, as well as the formulation of security and defense policies with scientific inputs.
