Provenance
The University of Hawai'i announced a de-accessioning program for 535 titles from its Science and Technology serials from South Asia. This was announced by Monica Ghosh, Chair of the Asia Collection & South Asia Studies Librarian, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, on the CONSALD mailing list, https://www.consald.org/ on April 12 2024. The Archives at NCBS identified the following 10 titles for physical preservation at its reading room, and some of these - see disposition details - were identified for archival (and digital) preservation. (1) Vijnan-Karmee, Journal of the Association of Scientific Workers of India. (2) Travaux de la Section scientifique et technique (French Institute of Pondicherry) (3) Biographical memoirs of fellows of the Indian National Science Academy. (4) Loris Magazine - Sri Lanka (5) Administration report of the Conservator of Forests (6) The Journal of the Association of Medical Women in India. (7) Journal of the Mysore University, section B: science, including medicine and engineering. (8) Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. (9) Science & Technology in the Islamic World (10) Administration report Ceylon. Department of Indigenous Medicine. Many of these volumes bear the "PL-480" stamp, indicating that were likely initially accessioned by the University of Hawai'i at Manoa under the PL-480 (Public Law 480) program launched by the United States starting in 1954. Under this program, India bought food grain from the United States with local currency, and the local currency funds were provided to many participating universities in the United States, which used the funds to purchase books and periodicals from India for their libraries. For more context, researchers can refer to "The South Asian P.L. 480 Library Program, 1962-1968" by Maureen L. P. Patterson, published in the Journal of Asian Studies in 1969: https://doi.org/10.2307/2942409. The selected volumes were moved from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Library on Sep 17, 2024, to facilitate further transport to the Archives at NCBS. In January 2025, this accession of a portion of these journals (listed below) were flown from UCSF to Chennai, and then transported by road to Archives at NCBS, and received by Ravi K Boyapati and Venkat Srinivasan on Jan 6, 2025. (1) Vijnan-Karmee, Journal of the Association of Scientific Workers of India. (2) Travaux de la Section scientifique et technique (French Institute of Pondicherry) (3) Biographical memoirs of fellows of the Indian National Science Academy.
