Zafar Futehally

Content Description

Zafar Futehally was a prominent environmental conservationist, most notable for writing extensively on ornithology and being the founder-editor of The Newsletter for Birdwatchers. He was also one of the founding members of the Bangalore Environment Trust in 1987. His material donated to the archives consists of birding diaries that belonged to Thomas Waterfield who was a birder based out of Pune, project documents, issues of Newsletter for Birdwatchers, brochures, and research references.

Provenance

An initial portion of the collection was given to Venkat Srinivasan at the Archives by L Shyamal on October 3rd, 2022. Material was in possession of L Shyamal who has digitised a part of the collection and has uploaded it on his page ‘GardenofShyamal’ at archive.org. The two diaries which belonged to Thomas Waterfield were given to Anjali J R at the Archives by L Shyamal on November 17th, 2022. Another envelope containing material about BNHS, Lifescape project and newspaper clippings by H. A. C. were given to Anjali J R at the Archives by L Shyamal on January 25th, 2023.

Retention Rule

The papers could help provide context to the people, movements and organisations that shaped ecological conservation in India. The Archives has offered to preserve and catalogue these materials. The donor and the Archives have agreed that the Archives will have full authority in handling the material in the future, including transferring it to a more suitable archive when the situation arises.
