This accession consists of papers belonging to Michael Lewis. Michael Lewis is a professor of environmental studies at Salisbury University, USA. He is trained in the fields of Biology, Environmental History, and American studies. He has worked in the field of environmental history, focussing on India and America. He looks at the development of ecology as a field of study, and investigates the role cultural understandings play in nature, conservation and environmental policies. He had written a book titled ‘Inventing Global Ecology : Tracking the Biodiversity Ideal in India, 1947–1997’ based on global development of ecology in the 20th century by using India as a case study. The accession primarily includes Lewis’ oral history transcripts of oral history interviews conducted as part of his work on history of conservation science and politics in the USA and India.

The accession will be transferred to a new series titled Michael Lewis Oral History transcripts under the Small Donations : Ecology and collection. The accession includes transcripts of oral history interviews conducted with ecologists, conservators whom Lewis had interviewed in India. Also included are permission forms and email from the interviewees.

Retention Rule
The material documents the activities, policies and developments in ecology and conservation science in India. It could be of relevance to those interested in the intersection of history, environmental sciences, post colonialism and environmental policies. The Archives has offered to preserve and catalogue these materials. The donor and the Archives have agreed that the Archives will have full authority in handling the material in the future.
