Small Donations - Ecology and Conservation
Content Description
This accession consists of papers belonging to different individuals and organisations that have worked in the fields of ecology and conservation. It includes material belonging to Zafar Futehally, L Shyamal, Thomas Waterfield, N S Adkoli, Vijay Thiruvady, Shanti Chandola, Pandit Shriram Sharma etc. Zafar Futehally is a renowned ornithologist and naturalist who was instrumental in popularising birdwatching in India through a Newsletter for Birdwatchers which he edited from 1959-2002. Shyamal Lakshminarayan is an independent researcher. He is also a theorist and practitioner of open science. The accession contains printed, cyclostyled and handwritten material. It includes a number of newsletters published by different local organisations across metropolitan cities in India. The published newsletters such as Newsletter for Birdwatchers edited by Zafar Futehally. Bulletin for Birdwatchers' Field ̧Club of Bangalore run by the Merlin Nature Club, PITTA : Bulletin of the Birdwatcher's Society of Andhra Pradesh, edited by Aasheesh Pittie and letters from Delhi Bird Club edited by Bikram Grewal and WWF quarterly are retained. Another portion of the accession includes correspondence in the form of typed and hand-written letters. The books and reference material in the accession are included as they pertain to a network of persons, ecological research organisations or conservation projects connected to Zafar Futehally. Another part of the accession are two diaries which contain a birdwatching journal kept by Thomas Watefield which was given to Zafar Futehally. The accession consists of a copy of a draft manuscript for a book in Hindi written and typed by Pandit Shriram Sharma. Pandit Shriram Sharma (1892 -1967), was the editor of 'Vishaal Bhaarat' (one of the most acclaimed Hindi magazines of its time), and also the author of books on Indian wildlife and the freedom struggle. He wrote in Hindi, his books on wildlife include Jungle ke Jeev and Shikar. He was a contemporary of Jim Corbett, and Pearl S Buck. The accession also contains a booklet - Citizen’s report on Hyderabad, 1985. This accession includes papers belonging to N. S. Adkoli. Adkoli was a renowned forest officer who was —-. The accession contains printed and handwritten material. It includes an unpublished memoir by Adkoli. An album and few loose photographs and a report on the Ranganatittu bird sanctuary have been retained.
Condition Description
The collection is fairly in good condition. Some of the letters appear to be fragile and torn at the edges.The booklet is fragile and requires careful and minimal handling.

The Small Donation - Ecology and Conservation consists of multiple donations made by different donors to the Archives at NCBS. They have been retained under the collection as the smaller batches material fit under the theme of ecology and conservation.

Provenance
An initial portion of the collection was given to Venkat Srinivasan at the Archives by L Shyamal on October 3rd, 2022. Material was in possession of L Shyamal who has digitised a part of the collection and has uploaded it on his page ‘GardenofShyamal’ at archive.org. The two diaries which belonged to Thomas Waterfield were given to Anjali J R at the Archives by L Shyamal on November 17th, 2022. Another envelope containing material about BNHS, Lifescape project and newspaper clippings by H. A. C. were given to Anjali J R at the Archives by L Shyamal on January 25th, 2023. The Adkoli papers were given to Anjali J R at the Archives by Anand Adkoli on March 7th, 2023. Material was in the possession of Anand Adkoli, who is the son of N S Adkoli. The material related to Bangalore Environmental Trust (BET) was given to Venkat Srinivasan at Bangalore on June 21, 2023. Material was in possession of Vijay Thiruvady who was formerly associated with BET. A copy of an environmental report of Hyderabad was given to Anjali J R by Bharat Bushan at Centre for Economics and Social Sciences, Hyderabad on 11th May, 2023. Material was in the possession of Bharat Bushan who was a contributor to the citizen’s report. This collection also draws from material related to Pandit Shriram Sharma that was donated by Arun Agnihotri and Samira Agnihotri. The material was received by Anjali JR on 30th March, 2023.
Retention Rule
The papers could help provide context to the people, movements and organisations that shaped ecological conservation in India. The Archives has offered to preserve and catalogue these materials. The donor and the Archives have agreed that the Archives will have full authority in handling the material in the future, including transferring it to a more suitable archive when the situation arises.
