The accession contains 117 issues of the Bengali science journal ‘Vigyan o Vigyankarmi’ (Science and Science Workers). It was packaged and sent from Calcutta by Rabindranath Majumdar and Pradip Datta. It was received by Ravi Boyapati at the Archives at NCBS on November 22, 2023. Vigyan o Vigyankarmi is the official Journal of the West Bengal’s Science Workers Association or West Bengal Vigynankarmi Sansthan. A social and scientific affairs magazine, it touches upon the development of scientific and industrial policy in India and the welfare of ‘scientific’ workers i.e. those in scientific, technical and industrial domains. This accession consists of issues from the 1970s to 2021. The language of the collection is Bengali. The accession consists of issues of magazines of A4 dimensions

Condition Description

Most of the journals are in good condition. Some magazines from the 1970s and 1980s are fragile and require to be handled carefully.

Dispostion

The accession is transferred to a new collection called ‘Vijnan o Vijnankarmi’. It consists of one series named after the donors, Rabindranath Majumdar and Pradip Dutta. This series is divided into six sub-series. Sub-series 1 consists of issues of the magazine from 1970 to 1979. Sub-series 2 consists of magazines from 1980 to 1989. Sub-series 3 consists of magazines from 1990 to 1999. Sub-series 4 consists of magazines from 2000 to 2009. Sub-series 5 consists of magazines from 2010 to 2019. Lastly, sub-series 6 consists of magazines from 2020 and beyond.

Retention Rule

The Vijnan O Vigyankarmi Journal collection fits under the scope of the Archives at NCBS as part of the history of contemporary science through its focus on science policy, scientific workers and labour and economic policy impacted by science and that had ramifications for the progress of science. The Archives shall have full authority in handling the material in the future.
