Carl D'Silva Papers

 Accession
Identifier: 2023-070

Content Description

The accession consists of papers belonging to Carl D’Silva. Carl D’Silva, born in 1963, was an acclaimed wildlife artist from Goa, India, known for his detailed bird illustrations. Even before pursuing a conventional art education at JJ School of Art in Bombay, his early school records show a growing interest in exploring various art styles, with an affinity for nature and scenic landscapes. In 1986, he joined Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) as a staff artist and began working with renowned ornithologist Salim Ali on producing illustrations of birds for the ‘Journal of BNHS’. Most notably, Carl designed a new set of 64 colour plates depicting 538 species for the 13th edition of Salim Ali’s book ‘The Birds of India’, published in 2002. He is also the first Indian artist to be invited by The Society of Wildlife Artists to exhibit his work at London’s Mall Galleries between 1987 to 1992. Carl D’Silva collaborated extensively with Scottish book publisher Christopher Helm on field guides for birds in India and Europe. After returning to Goa in 1989, he actively worked with organisations such as the Centre for Environmental Education (CEE) and World Wild Fund for Nature in India (WWF) on leading wildlife conservation initiatives in Goa. In 2010, Carl became the founding member of Goa Bird Conservation Network (GBCN) which consists of a group of enthusiastic birders who work to document, and bring awareness to issues related to the conservation of birds in Goa.
