Content Description

The accession consists of research data, field notebooks, photographs, letters, postcards, artifacts, legal documents, newspaper, and magazine clippings which are either related to or collected by C P Rajendran and Kusala Rajendran. The letters and postcards cover a wide range of topics and are mostly addressed to Kusala Rajendran. Some letters are also addressed to C P Rajendran and some of them are addressed to both of them along with their son. The research data contains reports, technical correspondence, and field research notebooks related to the estimation of dates with the help of samples that have been collected across many sites of geological importance in India. As an extension to the research data, there are also photographs of field investigations, samples, sections, and structures from where samples were obtained by C P Rajendran and/or Kusala Rajendran. There are also some photographs of personal nature during their time in the United States of America. The accession also includes media clippings that have either been authored or collected by C P Rajendran or Kusala Rajendran. The subject matter ranges from general articles on the importance and state of science in India to reporting about earthquakes, tsunamis, and natural disaster awareness. Also included are articles about Pavanan, movie reviews by Kusala Rajendran, and articles by C P Rajendran about the origins of the earth and related themes. There are also legal correspondence and writ petitions pertaining to cases involving C P Rajendran and Kusala Rajendran. Also included in the accession are proposal documents, published book chapters, and booklets related to research and academic work done by C P Rajendran and Kusala Rajendran. Ephemera includes booklets about convocation addresses and science policy. The artifacts consist of memorabilia of the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens which occurred on May 18, 1980, and a horse terracotta figurine.

Condition Description

The collection is in a good condition. The collection contains two artifacts: Memorabilia in the shape of Mt. St. Helens commemorating its eruption on May 18, 1980, and a terracotta horse figurine. The horse figuring needs special care while handling.

Dispostion

The collection draws from material related to C P Rajendran and Kusala Rajendran. The Material was picked up and brought into the archives by Anjali J R from IISc, on two separate occasions. The material picked up on January 31, 2023, contained research data, artifacts, legal documents, awards, books, newspapers, and magazine clippings. And the material picked up on April 6, 2023, contained photographs, letters, and postcards. A photo album and field research notebook were picked up on September 22, 2023 by Aditya R and brought into the archives. Chittenipattu Puthenveettil Rajendran and Kusala Rajendran are Indian geologists who have worked extensively in the field of seismology to understand the processes, mechanisms and hazards associated with earthquakes in the Indian contexts. They have also been responsible for producing much needed seismic data about the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and have also led to the development of paleoseismology in the Indian context. They were previously affiliated with the Centre of Earth Science Studies, Kerala and the Centre for Earth Sciences, IISc, Karnataka. They are currently affiliated to the Consortium for Sustainable Development – a non-profit organization based in the USA. The accession will be transferred to a new collection titled the C P Rajendran and Kusala Rajendran Papers.

Retention Rule

The Rajendran Papers fit under the scope of the Archives at NCBS as they are reflective of important research done in the field of geology, seismology, and natural disaster science in the Indian context. The Archives shall have full authority in handling the material in the future.
